The Fundamental Baptist Mission of Trinidad and Tobago (FBMTT), which first started as a national mission in 1912, was founded by its first Superintendent, the late Reverend James Vincent Quamina. At the time, Rev. Quamina held meetings with church members at his home at Alberto Street, Woodbrook, while converts were baptised in a nearby river. As converts became members and a set pattern of services was established, finding a place of worship was necessary. The Woodbrook area proved fruitful in this regard. Since the Pastor resided there, the concentration had been on this area and the adjoining St. James area from the beginning.

In 1922, a site was acquired to erect a church building. Its erection was made possible by a substantial money gift of $3,000.00 from the Randolph Street Baptist Church in Charleston, West Virginia, in the United States of America, and the contribution of its members in time, labour and money.

In 1924, the Bethel Fundamental Baptist Tabernacle, located at #4 Kelly Kenny Street, Woodbrook, in Port of Spain, was the first church erected 's national headquarters. The church was dedicated in 1924 by a Jamaican Baptist minister, Reverend K. L. Kalso. It was named the Bethel Baptist Tabernacle, thus beginning the trend of giving the Mission's churches Bible names unless it was seen fit to do otherwise.
